Yellow fever is the one travel vaccine that can stop you at the border. Where you need it
Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. It kills a significant proportion of people who develop the severe form, and there is no treatment beyond supportive care.
Countries that commonly require or recommend the vaccine include Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, Senegal, The Gambia, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Venezuela. Some countries with no yellow fever of their own, including India, Thailand, Australia and much of the Middle East, still demand a certificate if you have travelled through a risk country first. This catches out a lot of people on multi-stop trips.

How the vaccine works
One injection. Protection starts 10 days after the dose, and the certificate becomes valid on that tenth day, so book at least two weeks before you fly. The certificate is valid for life. If you were vaccinated before 2016 and your certificate shows a 10-year expiry, it is still accepted worldwide and you do not need a booster.
The vaccine is a live vaccine, which means it is not suitable for everyone. It is not given to babies under nine months, and we take extra care with anyone over 60 having it for the first time, anyone with a weakened immune system, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Where the vaccine is not appropriate but a certificate is required for entry, we can issue a medical exemption letter.
What to expect
Most people have no more than a sore arm. Around one in four get mild flu-like symptoms, headache or muscle aches a few days later, which settle within a week. Serious reactions are very rare.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Kenya?
Kenya requires a certificate from travellers arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, and the vaccine is recommended for most travellers to Kenya regardless. We confirm the current position for your route during your consultation.
How long does the yellow fever certificate last?
For life. The World Health Organization changed the rule in 2016, and certificates that show a 10-year expiry are still valid.
Can I have yellow fever with other travel vaccines on the same day?
Yes. Yellow fever can be given alongside typhoid, hepatitis A, rabies and most other travel vaccines at the same appointment. The exception is MMR, which needs a four-week gap either side.
What if I lose my certificate?
Come back with photo ID and we can issue a replacement from your clinic record.
Is the vaccine safe over 60?
It can be, but the risk of a rare serious reaction is higher for first-time recipients over 60. We assess this individually and only vaccinate where the travel risk justifies it. An exemption letter is the alternative.
