Typhoid at FastHeal Woking
Typhoid is the second most common travel vaccine we give, and for anyone heading to South Asia it is close to essential. The injection is quick, works within two weeks, and lasts three years, which covers most people for several trips.
Where the risk is
Typhoid is a bacterial infection of the gut and bloodstream caught from food and water contaminated with sewage. The highest-risk region by a distance is the Indian subcontinent: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal account for the great majority of cases brought back to the UK. Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East and parts of Central and South America also carry meaningful risk.
Visiting friends and relatives is a particular risk factor, because you tend to stay longer, eat at home rather than in hotels, and take fewer precautions. Drug-resistant typhoid is now widespread in Pakistan, which makes prevention more important than it used to be, since the infection is harder to treat once you have it.
Symptoms
A high fever that climbs over several days, headache, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea, and exhaustion. Untreated, it can cause intestinal bleeding or perforation. It needs antibiotics, and with resistance rising, those antibiotics are not guaranteed to work.
The vaccine
The typhoid injection is a single dose of inactivated vaccine. Protection starts around 14 days after the jab and lasts three years, after which a single booster renews it. It is suitable from two years of age.
It gives roughly 70 to 80 per cent protection, which is good but not complete, so food and water care still matters. Cooked food served hot, bottled or boiled water, no ice, and peel your own fruit.
An oral typhoid vaccine (three capsules over five days) exists as an alternative for people who cannot have injections. Ask if this applies to you.
Side effects
A sore arm, and occasionally a mild temperature or headache for a day. Nothing that should affect your plans.

Do I need the typhoid vaccine for India?
Yes. It is recommended for all travellers to India, including short business trips and city stays, because the risk is not limited to rural areas.
Do I need it for Turkey or Egypt?
Recommended for most travellers to Egypt. For Turkey it depends on where you are going and how you are travelling; we advise during the consultation.
Can I have typhoid and hepatitis A together?
Yes, either as two injections at the same appointment or as a single combined vaccine.
How long before travel should I have it?
At least two weeks, ideally. If you leave sooner, have it anyway; partial protection is better than none and it will be in place for later trips.
Is the typhoid vaccine free on the NHS?
It is one of the vaccines that some GP practices give free for travel, but access varies and appointments can take weeks. We can see you quickly.
