About the service
Hepatitis A & B at FastHeal Woking
Hepatitis A is the travel vaccine we give most often, because it covers almost everywhere outside Western Europe, North America and Australasia. Hepatitis B is worth adding for longer trips, work abroad, or anywhere you might need medical or dental treatment. Both are available at FastHeal Woking as separate vaccines or as one combined course.
Hepatitis A: the food and water one
Hepatitis A is a liver infection picked up from contaminated food, water and ice, or from close contact with someone who has it. It is common across Asia, Africa, Central and South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. You cannot reliably avoid it by being careful with what you eat, because the person preparing the food may be carrying it.
The illness itself means weeks of fatigue, nausea and jaundice. It is rarely fatal but it will wreck a trip and a good deal of the time after it.
Course: one injection gives protection for a year, starting about two weeks after the jab. A second dose 6 to 12 months later extends cover to around 25 years, and in practice most people never need another one. If you are flying tomorrow, one dose still gives useful protection.
Hepatitis B: the blood and fluids one
Hepatitis B spreads through blood and body fluids. For travellers the realistic routes are medical or dental treatment abroad, tattoos and piercings, sexual contact, and injuries in places where sterile equipment cannot be assumed. It is recommended for anyone staying more than a month, working in healthcare, volunteering, or travelling with a condition that might need treatment.
Course: three doses. The standard schedule is day 0, one month and six months. For travel we usually use the accelerated schedule of day 0, day 7 and day 21, with a fourth dose at 12 months for long-term cover.
The combined vaccine
If you need both, the combined hepatitis A and B vaccine saves injections. It follows the hepatitis B schedule, so three doses over three weeks on the accelerated course, or over six months on the standard one, plus a 12-month booster for lasting protection.
Side effects
A sore arm for a day or two is common. Headache and tiredness happen to a minority. Serious reactions are very rare. Both vaccines are inactivated, so they are suitable in pregnancy where the travel risk justifies it.

Frequently asked questions
Is hepatitis A free on the NHS?
Some GP practices offer it free for travel, but many no longer do or cannot fit you in before you leave. We can see you within days and give it on the day.
I had hepatitis A years ago. Do I need a booster?
If you completed both doses, no. If you only had one dose, a second dose at any point afterwards completes the course; you do not need to start again.
Can children have these vaccines?
Hepatitis A from 12 months and hepatitis B from birth, with age-appropriate doses. Children born in the UK since 2017 have had hepatitis B as part of their routine jabs.
How quickly does the accelerated hepatitis B course work?
Three doses over 21 days give good short-term protection. The 12-month dose is what makes it last.
Which countries need hepatitis A?
Most of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and parts of Eastern Europe. Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Thailand, India, Bali and Mexico all fall inside the recommendation.
