About the service
Rabies at FastHeal Woking
Rabies is the travel vaccine people most often skip and most often regret. Once symptoms appear it is almost always fatal, and the treatment you need after a bite is scarce in exactly the places where bites happen. Pre-exposure vaccination at FastHeal Woking takes that fear out of the trip.
Why bother if it is so rare?
Because being bitten is not rare. Dogs, monkeys, cats and bats bite, scratch and lick thousands of British travellers every year, mostly in Asia and Africa. Every one of those incidents needs urgent assessment and, in a risk country, post-exposure treatment.
If you have not been vaccinated, that treatment means a course of rabies vaccine plus rabies immunoglobulin, a blood product that is expensive, in short supply, and frequently unavailable outside major cities. Travellers have had to cut trips short and fly to another country to get it.
If you have had the pre-exposure course, you need two booster doses and no immunoglobulin. That is the difference between an inconvenient afternoon and a medical evacuation.
Who should have it
- Anyone visiting rural areas or staying longer than a month in Asia, Africa, Central or South America
- Backpackers, cyclists, runners and trekkers, who are more likely to meet animals and be far from help
- Children, who are more likely to approach animals and less likely to report a scratch
- Anyone working with animals, volunteering at sanctuaries, or caving
- Travellers to Bali, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Morocco, South Africa and similar destinations where dog rabies is common
The course
Three injections. The standard schedule is day 0, day 7 and day 21 to 28. If time is short, an accelerated schedule of day 0, day 3 and day 7 is licensed for adults and gives good protection. Once the course is complete, protection is considered long lasting; a booster is only needed if you are at ongoing risk, and blood tests can check your immunity.
Rabies vaccine supply in the UK has been disrupted at times during 2026. We hold stock where we can but strongly recommend booking the first dose as soon as your trip is confirmed rather than the week before you leave.
If you are bitten, scratched or licked abroad
Vaccinated or not: wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes, apply antiseptic, and get to a doctor the same day. Do not wait to see if the animal looks ill. Carry your vaccination record so local clinicians know which treatment you need.
Side effects
A sore arm and occasionally mild headache or tiredness. The vaccine is inactivated and safe for children and, where risk justifies it, in pregnancy.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the rabies vaccine for Bali?
It is recommended. Bali has ongoing dog rabies, monkey bites are common at temples, and immunoglobulin is not always available on the island.
Can I do the course in one week?
Yes. The accelerated schedule of day 0, 3 and 7 is licensed for adults and is what we use for short-notice trips.
How long does the rabies vaccine last?
After a full course, protection is long lasting. If you are bitten years later you still only need booster doses, not immunoglobulin.
Is there a rabies vaccine shortage?
Supply in the UK has been intermittent in 2026. Call us to check current stock before you book, and book early.
Can children have it?
Yes, from birth, at the same dose as adults.
