Who should consider it
Cholera is a bacterial gut infection caught from contaminated water and food. It causes profuse watery diarrhoea that can dehydrate a healthy adult to a dangerous point within hours. Outbreaks flare wherever water and sewage systems break down: after floods, in refugee camps, in conflict zones.
Current outbreak areas shift from year to year but in recent years have included Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Haiti, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The vaccine is recommended for:
- Humanitarian, medical and disaster-relief workers
- Long-stay travellers, volunteers and backpackers in areas with limited clean water
- Anyone with a condition that reduces stomach acid or makes severe diarrhoea especially dangerous
- Travellers who cannot avoid untreated water or unsafe food
For a fortnight in a resort, even in a country with cholera, the answer is usually that you do not need it. We will tell you that if it applies.
The vaccine
The standard oral cholera vaccine is taken as a drink. Adults and children over six have two doses, at least one week apart and no more than six weeks apart. Children aged two to six have three doses. You need to avoid food and drink for an hour before and after each dose, and the course must be complete at least a week before you could be exposed.
Protection lasts around two years for adults; a single booster dose renews it if you are travelling again within that window. If more than two years have passed, the full course is repeated.
The vaccine also gives some short-term protection against one common cause of travellers' diarrhoea, which is a bonus for some travellers but not a reason to have it on its own.
A single-dose oral cholera vaccine is also licensed in the UK. Ask whether it is available and suitable for your trip.
Side effects
Mild stomach upset, occasionally headache. Most people have none.

Is the cholera vaccine an injection?
No. It is a liquid you drink in clinic, mixed with a buffer solution.
Do I need a cholera certificate to enter any country?
No country officially requires proof of cholera vaccination for entry. Occasionally border officials in some African countries ask for one anyway; we can provide a record of vaccination.
Can I have it with other travel vaccines?
Yes. Because it is oral, it does not interfere with injected vaccines. If you are also having the oral typhoid vaccine, we space them appropriately.
How far in advance do I need to start?
Allow at least three weeks: two doses a week or more apart, then a week for protection to build.
