Symptoms

Are you experiencing any of these?

Perimenopause can start several years before your periods stop, often in your 40s, and the symptoms aren't always the obvious ones. A lot of women spend months putting them down to stress, bad sleep or a busy life.

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Poor sleep
  • Brain fog
  • Mood changes
  • Anxiety or irritability
  • Reduced libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Joint and muscle aches
  • Changes to your periods
  • Feeling unlike yourself

You don't need to have all of these, or be certain it's menopause, to book. Some of these symptoms have other causes too, such as thyroid problems, which is one reason a proper assessment is worth having. If something has changed and it's affecting your life, that's reason enough to talk it through.

Your appointment

How it works

  1. 1

    Book

Choose a time online or give us a call. Your first appointment is a private consultation at our Woking clinic.

  2. 2

    Assessment

Your clinician talks through your symptoms, your periods, your medical and family history, any medicines or HRT you already take, and what's affecting your day-to-day life most.

  3. 3

    Your plan

Together you'll go through the options that make sense for you. That might mean HRT, non-hormonal treatment, changes you can make yourself, or seeing your GP if something needs looking into further.

  4. 4

    Tests and treatment where appropriate

Blood tests and prescriptions are only arranged when there's a clinical reason for them.

  5. 5

    Review

Your first review is usually around three months after starting treatment, then at least once a year. It's common for HRT to need adjusting in the first few months, so these appointments matter.

Testosterone

Wondering whether testosterone could be right for you?

Testosterone gets talked about a lot, and it's easy to come away unsure whether it applies to you. For some women it can help with low sexual desire linked to menopause. It isn't suitable for everyone, and it's usually only considered when HRT is already in place and hasn't improved libido on its own.

Testosterone isn't licensed for women in the UK, so when it is prescribed, it's prescribed "off-label". That's recognised practice under national menopause guidance, but it does mean a careful assessment and regular monitoring are essential.

If testosterone isn't the right option, your clinician will explain why and talk you through what else might help.

Blood tests

Do you need blood tests?

Not always. If you're over 45 and have typical symptoms, perimenopause and menopause are usually diagnosed from your symptoms alone. Hormone levels rise and fall so much during perimenopause that a single result can be misleading.

Testing can be useful if:

  • you're under 45 and have symptoms
  • your symptoms aren't typical or could have another cause
  • you're being assessed for, or monitored on, certain treatments such as testosterone

If you do need bloods, we can take them at the clinic and your clinician will go through the results with you.

FAQs

Menopause clinic questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us. With your permission, we'll let your GP know about any treatment we prescribe so your records stay up to date.

I'm still having periods. Can you help?

Yes. Perimenopause symptoms often start while your periods are still happening, sometimes years before they stop. You don't need to wait for your periods to stop before getting advice.

Is HRT safe?

For many women, particularly those under 60, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks. The risks depend on your age, the type of HRT and your own health and family history, which is why the assessment matters. Your clinician will go through what applies to you personally.

I already get HRT from my GP. Can you still help?

Yes. If you're still getting symptoms or side effects, or you'd like your treatment reviewed, we can look at what you're taking and talk through whether a change might help. Bring details of your current prescription.

Will I definitely be prescribed treatment?

No. Treatment is only prescribed if it's clinically appropriate and it's what you want after going through the options. You're paying for a proper consultation, not a prescription.

Do I need blood tests?

Not always. If you're over 45 with typical symptoms, a diagnosis is usually made from your symptoms. Your clinician will recommend tests if there's a clinical reason for them.

How much does private menopause care cost?

An initial consultation is £[TBC] and follow-ups are £[TBC]. Blood tests and medication are charged separately and only if you need them. Your clinician will tell you the cost of anything before it goes ahead.

Can I use my HRT prescription prepayment certificate?

No. The HRT prepayment certificate only covers NHS prescriptions. Private prescriptions are charged at the private price.

Can you prescribe testosterone?

Sometimes. It's only considered after a full hormone and menopause assessment, and only if it's clinically appropriate for you. See the testosterone section above.

How long is the appointment, and is it face to face?

Your first appointment lasts around 30 minutes at our Woking clinic. Follow-ups can be in person or by video.

What should I bring?

A list of any medicines you take, including HRT or contraception, any recent blood test results, and a note of your symptoms and when your periods last changed. A few weeks of notes on your symptoms can be really useful, but it isn't essential.

I'm under 40. Can you help?

If your periods have stopped or become irregular before 40, please speak to your GP as well. This can have causes that need specialist investigation, and your GP can arrange that.
